George Jacob Benner

George Jacob Benner (born April 13, 1859 in Gettysburg , Pennsylvania , †  December 30, 1930 there ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1899 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Benner attended the public schools in his home country. In 1878 he graduated from Pennsylvania College , also in Gettysburg. After that he taught as a teacher for some time. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1881, he began to work in this profession in Gettysburg. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1886 he took part as a delegate to their regional party convention for Pennsylvania.

In the congressional election of 1896 Benner was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican James Alonzo Stahle on March 4, 1897 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1898, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1899 . This was shaped by the events of the Spanish-American War of 1898 .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, George Benner practiced again as a lawyer in Gettysburg, where he died on December 30, 1930.
