George Kubler

George Alexander Kubler (born July 26, 1912 in Hollywood , † October 3, 1996 Hamden, Connecticut ) was an American art historian .

Life

Kubler was the son of the art historian Frederick William Kubler and his wife Ellen, née Orloff-Beckmann. In his early youth he lived mostly in Europe. His father died when Kubler was eight years old. After his mother's death, he went to boarding school in the United States . There he studied at Yale University , where he received his BA in 1934 , his MA in 1936 and, under the supervision of Henri Focillon , his Ph.D. in 1940. for art history .

From 1938, before his doctorate, he worked at Yale University, initially as a lecturer in art history, from 1964 until his retirement in 1983 as a professor. As a professor he was the first Robert Lehman Professor from 1964 to 1975 , then Sterling Professor of Art History. 1985/1986 he was Kress Professor at the Center for Advanced Studies of the National Gallery of Art in Washington . In addition to his work on European art, Kubler mainly dealt with the architecture and art of the indigenous people of Mesoamerica and the Andean countries . He was considered one of the leading experts on pre-Columbian and early post-Columbian art.

In addition to three Guggenheim fellowships and a Grant-in-Aid fellowship for research in Mexico from the American Council of Learned Societies , Kubler received the Mexican government's highest award for foreigners, the Order of the Aztec Eagle ( Águila Azteca ), the oldest and most important in 1991 Award from Yale University, the William Clyde DeVane Medal, as well as numerous other awards and honorary degrees. Kubler was a member of the Mexican Academia de Artes and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and, since 1978, the American Philosophical Society .

He was married to Elizabeth Bushnell Kubler, with whom he had three daughters and a son.
