Giorgos Leonardos ( Greek Γιώργος Λεονάρδος , born February 20, 1937 in Alexandria , Egypt ) is a Greek author of historical novels .

Youth and education

After the early death of his father, Leonardos lived with his mother Maria in Alexandria. He was an avid reader of fiction and history. As a student in Alexandria, he published short stories in "Tachydromos" and "Anatoli", the city's Greek daily newspapers.

In 1954 he moved to Greece to study physics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki . After graduating, he studied journalism and started working as a journalist.

Professional activity

Leonardos worked as a reporter for the most important Athens newspapers "Apogevmatini", "Eleftherotypia", "Mesimvrini", "Eleftheros Typos", "Ethnos" and as a columnist for the business newspaper "Kerdos". In 1964 he was the first correspondent for the Athens News Agency in Belgrade , and in 1976 in New York , where he was also editor-in-chief of the local Greek newspaper Ethnikos Kirikas.

Leonardos also worked as a newscaster for public and private television channels in Greece, covering the Vietnam War , the Iran-Iraq War and the Persian Gulf War. He is a member of the Association of Daily Press Editors in Greece and the National Society of Greek Writers.

Works and awards

His first novel "Grandma's Red Sofa" was published in 1992. He received two awards for the best historical novel of the Greek Society of Christian Studies for the novels "Mara, the Christian Sultana" and "Sleeping Beauty of Mystras". For his services to journalism and literature, he received a prize from the Botsis Foundation.

The novels "Michael VIII Palaiologos the Liberator", "The Palaiologists" and "The Last Palaiologist" form the trilogy about the dynasty of the palaeologists . This trilogy is complemented by the historical novel “Sofia Palaiologina”.

In 2008 he was nominated for the Greek State Prize for the best historical novel with his novel "The Last Paleologist".

The historical novel "Barbarossa the Pirate" was also published in England, Italy and Spain. In 1980 he published the English-Greek dictionary of military terms, in 2000 he published the "Structure of the Novel". His latest historical novel is "Maggelan"
