George Lyon

George Lyon (born July 16, 1956 in Rothesay , Isle of Bute ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Liberal Democrats .

Lyon attended the Rothesay Academy and then worked as a self-employed farmer. He is a member and past President of the National Farmers Union of Scotland .

Political career

In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999 , Lyon ran for the constituency of Argyll and Bute and was able to secure the direct mandate before the SNP candidate Duncan Hamilton . In the parliamentary elections in 2003 he was able to defend his mandate by a clear margin. From 2005, Lyon was Deputy Minister for Finance and Parliamentary Business. After the parliamentary elections in 2007 , Lyon lost his mandate to the SNP politician Jim Mather .

At the European level, Lyon ran for the 2009 European elections and won one of two seats for the Liberal Democrats in the constituency of Scotland . As a result, he moved into the European Parliament for the first time . In the 2014 European elections , Lyons was the top candidate for the Scottish Liberal Democrats. Since the Liberal Democrats in Scotland received only 7.1% of the vote, the party did not win any of the six mandates to be awarded. Lyon subsequently left the European Parliament at the end of the electoral term.
