George M. Bergman
George Mark Bergman (born July 22, 1943 in Brooklyn ) is an American mathematician who studies algebra .
Bergman attended Stuyvesant High School in New York City and studied at the University of California, Berkeley ( bachelor's degree 1963) and at Harvard University , where he received his doctorate in 1968 under John T. Tate (Commuting elements in free algebras and related topics in ring theory). In 1967 he became Assistant Professor , 1972 Associate Professor and 1978 Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he retired in 2009 .
1969-70 he was a visiting professor at Bedford College of the University of London and 1970/71 at Harvard. From 1971 to 1973 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . In 1977/78 he was Miller Professor for Basic Research at Berkeley.
In algebra he deals with ring theory (associative rings), universal algebra , category theory and he also deals with mathematical logic.
In 1974 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Vancouver (Some category-theoretic ideas in algebra (a too-brief tour of algebraic structure, monads and the adjoint tower)).
