George McGinnis (born August 12, 1950 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) is a retired American basketball player.

After a very successful year at Indiana University , McGinnis began his professional career in 1971 with the Indiana Pacers American Basketball Association team . The 2.03 meter tall power forward quickly played its way into the team and had an important role in winning the championships in the 1971/72 and 1972/73 seasons. In his second season he scored 27.6 points per game, the second best value in the league. In the 1974/75 season he scored 29.8 points per game and overall the most points in the ABA. At the end of the season he was elected MVP of the ABA together with Julius Erving . From 1973 to 1975 he was elected to the ABA All-Star Team .

For the 1975/76 season he moved to the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Philadelphia 76ers , who had received the transfer rights to McGinnis in the 1973 NBA draft . In his first year in the NBA, he was invited to the NBA All-Star Game , elected to the All-NBA First Team , and he landed in 5th place in the NBA MVP election . In the second year in the NBA, he was able to confirm his achievements, he was again invited to the All-Star Game and this time elected to the All-NBA Second Team. The 76ers led McGinnis to the final of the playoffs, which were lost 4-2 to the Portland Trail Blazers .

On August 16, 1978 McGinnis was transferred to the Denver Nuggets along with a first-round draft pick in exchange for Bobby Jones , Ralph Simpson and a first-round draft pick . After a year without personal honors, McGinnis was invited again to the All-Star Game 1979 in Denver.

On February 1, 1980 he moved back to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Alex English and a first-round draft pick. His old team played in the NBA since the ABA merged with the NBA in 1976. McGinnis could no longer build on his previous achievements with the Pacers. He played two more years with moderate success before the Pacers fired him on October 27, 1982. On November 2, 1985, the Pacers excluded his jersey number 30 from re-awarding in honor of George McGinnis.
