The Reformed Church Gossau is a transverse church in the municipality of Gossau , Canton of Zurich , Switzerland .

history

A church of St. Mary has been attested in Gossau since the year 877. Due to a lack of space, a new building based on the model of the Hinwil church was decided in 1819 .

architecture

The church with its striking black pointed spire rises on a hill above the village. The house of worship was built between 1820 and 1821 according to the transverse gallery , which was popular for Protestant churches at the time . In contrast to the rococo transverse churches , the pilasters that structure the interior flow into an entablature with a tooth-cut frieze and crowning vases.

Gotthard Geissenhof , the plasterer of the church, later used the same strict classical forms in the Bäretswil church, which he designed entirely . In 1842 the stucco was given a colored version.

organ

Organ of the Reformed Church Gossau ZH

A first organ ( second-hand instrument with eleven registers acquired in 1811 from the “Sonnenhof” in Trogen AR , first mentioned in 1766) was placed in the choir gallery of the old church in 1812. Since Huldrych Zwingli's organ ban, it was one of the first to be heard in a Zurich church. This happened here on the condition that it should be used "never for public worship, but only for recanting and private music and even then in no way that is improper for a church and contrary to the dignity and purpose of a building dedicated to public worship".

From 1821 this organ was used in the new church. There it was replaced in 1898 by a pneumatic instrument made by Carl Theodor Kuhn .

Today's organ on the long gallery opposite the pulpit dates from 1963.
