George Peter Alexander Healy (born July 15, 1813 in Boston , Massachusetts , † June 24, 1894 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American painter .

Life

George Peter Alexander Healy was born in Boston on July 15, 1813. His father was an Irish merchant sea captain. Healy, the oldest of five children, fatherless at an early age, helped support his mother. He started drawing when he was sixteen.

Two years later, at the age of 18, Healy began painting portraits and was soon very successful.

In 1835 he went to Europe and studied under Antoine-Jean Gros in Paris and Rome . In Paris he received a third class medal in 1840 and a second class in 1855 when he exhibited Franklin urging the claims of the American Colonies before Louis XVI .

His final return to Chicago was in 1892. Healy was elected honorary member ( Honorary NA ) of the National Academy of Design in 1843 and wrote the book Reminiscences of a Portrait Painter ( German  "memories of a portrait painter" ).

Among his works are portraits of Daniel Webster , Henry Clay , John C. Calhoun , Arnold Henri Guyot , William H. Seward , Louis Philippe, and the Presidents of the United States from John Quincy Adams to Ulysses S. Grant . This series was painted for the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC . His works also include The Peacemakers (1868) and Abraham Lincoln (1869).

He died in Chicago on June 24, 1894 at the age of 80.
