George Pullicino (born February 17, 1964 in Sliema ) is a Maltese politician of the Nationalist Party and Minister.

biography

After attending school, Pullicino studied architecture at the University of Malta , where he particularly specialized in urban planning . Most recently he was General Manager of the Maltese Council for Science and Technology until 1996.

As early as 1980 he began his political career with the election to the executive committee of the Maltese Christian Democrat Students Movement (Studenti Demokristjani Maltin), which is close to the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN). In the following years he held various positions before he was President of the SDM between 1984 and 1987. He was then elected general secretary of the youth movement of the Nationalist Party (Moviment Zgħazagħ Partit Nazzjonalista) in 1987, of which he became president in 1990. In this function he was also a representative in international Christian Democratic youth movements and, among other things, from 1990 to 1992 he was a member of the Executive Committee of the Youth of the European People's Party . During this time he was responsible for environmental policy and relations with non- EU countries on the executive body .

In 1992 he applied unsuccessfully as a candidate for the Partit Nazzjonalista for election to the House of Representatives . In the 1996 election , Pullicino was first elected to the House of Representatives , where he represented constituency 10 . In the parliamentary elections in 1998 , 2003 and 2008 he was re-elected as a member of parliament.

After the Nationalist Party's electoral success, he became Parliamentary State Secretary to the Minister for the Interior and the Environment, Tonio Borg, in September 1998 .

Following the renewed electoral success of the PN, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Environment in the cabinet of Prime Minister Edward Fenech Adami on April 15, 2003 . He also took over this position after Fenech Adami's successor, Lawrence Gonzi, took office on March 23, 2004 and continues to do so today. His ministry includes not only the agriculture and fisheries sector, rural development and urban planning, the Maltese Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA), but since March 2004 also the strategy management for waste disposal on the islands of Malta , Gozo and Comino . As Minister of the Environment, after initially allowing bird hunting after severe criticism from animal rights activists, he also advocates the ban on bird hunting and bird protection .
