Coordinates: 41 ° 6 ′ S , 146 ° 49 ′ E The George Town Municipality is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Tasmania . The area is 653 km² and has about 6750 inhabitants (2016).
George Town is on the north coast of the island and is approximately 205 kilometers north of the capital Hobart . The area comprises 11 hamlets and hamlets: Beechford, Bell Bay, Bellingham, George Town, Hillwood, Lefroy, Long Reach, Low Head, Lulworth , Pipers River and Weymouth. The seat of the City Council is in the village of George Town in the west of the LGA, where about 4300 inhabitants live (2016).

The George Town Council has nine members. The mayor (mayor), his deputy (deputy) and seven councilors are directly elected by the residents of the LGA. George Town is not subdivided into districts.
