George Morgan Trefgarne, 1st Baron Trefgarne (born September 14, 1894 as George Garro-Jones , † September 27, 1960 ) was a British politician and peer .

Life

George Trefgarne was born as George Garro-Jones to the clergyman David Garro-Jones (1864-1935) and his wife Sarah Griffiths . He was educated at the boarding school Caterham School . In 1913 he enlisted in the military and took part in the First World War. In 1923 he joined Gray's Inn as a barrister . On May 9, 1940, he married Elizabeth Churchill , with whom he had four children, David Garro (* 1941), Trevor Garro (* 1944), Mary Elizabeth (* 1944) and Gwion George Garro (* 1953). Through a deed poll , he had his family name changed to Trefgarne on January 21, 1954 .

Political career

In the general election of 1923 Garro-Jones stood in the constituency of Hackney South for the Liberal Party , but could not prevail against the Labor candidate Herbert Stanley Morrison . In the general election in 1924 he succeeded in gaining a majority vote in the constituency of Hackney South and he moved into the lower house for the first time , which he initially belonged to until 1929. Garro-Jones ran for a seat again in the 1935 general election , this time in the Scottish constituency of Aberdeen North . This time he also ran for the Labor Party. Garro-Jones prevailed over the incumbent Conservative Party candidate , John George Burnett , and was given a second House mandate, which he held until the end of the election period in 1945.

On January 21, 1947 he was given the hereditary title of Baron Trefgarne , of Cleddau in the County of Pembroke . A seat in the House of Lords was associated with the title .
