John George Burnett

John George Burnett OBE JP (March 30, 1876 - November 14, 1935 ) was a British politician.

Life

Burnett was born in 1877 to George and Mary Burnett . He attended Trinity College near Perth and then studied at Magdalen College of Oxford University , which he described as Master left. In 1901 Burnett married Catherine Sarah Helen with whom he had five children, George Irvine Leslie (* 1903), Malcolm Stuart Leslie (* 1904), Helen Mary (* 1905), Jean Christian Isobel (* 1908) and Alison Elizabeth (* 1917) . In 1930 Burnett joined the Inner Temple and served as a barrister . In 1945 he received the Order of the British Empire with the rank of officer .

Political career

Between 1927 and 1930, Burnett was a member of Aberdeen City Council . In the general election of 1931 Burnett ran for the Conservative and Unionist Party for the mandate in the constituency of Aberdeen North . The election was disastrous for incumbent Labor MP William Wedgwood Benn . Compared to the 1929 election , he lost 36.3% of his votes and Burnett won the majority with 64.3%. In the following general election in 1935 , Burnett was unable to defend his mandate against Labor candidate George Morgan Garro-Jones and left the House of Commons after just one term .
