The Georgefischeriales are a group of smut fungi (Ustilaginomycotina) and, like all smut fungi, are plant parasites.

Features and way of life

Compared to the other orders, the representatives of this order are characterized by pore-free septa in the mature hyphae . All representatives are dimorphic, alternating between yeast-like and hyphae stages. The teliospores are light brown to dark and arise in the vegetative parts of their host plants. The interaction zones with the host are locally limited and have no interaction apparatus or haustoria . The four families differ in the shape of their basidia . The Tilletiariaceae are the only representatives of the Exobasidiomycetes with phragmobasidia .

Most species parasitize on monocots , but the two representatives of the Georgefischeriaceae on Convolvulaceae .

Systematics

The Georgefischeriales belong to the Exobasidiomycetes . It is not certain whether the Georgefischeriales form a monophyletic group. They are described by Begerow et al. (2006) subdivided as follows:
