Georges Bensoussan (historian)
Georges Bensoussan (* 1952 in French Morocco ) is a French historian and author .
Life
Bensoussan comes from a long-established Moroccan Jewish family who had to emigrate to France. He has specialized in the Jewish history of Europe and deals with anti-Semitism , the Shoah , Zionism and the problems of remembrance . He is editor-in-chief of the French magazine Revue d'Histoire de la Shoah . At the same time, he is responsible for the publications of the Mémorial de la Shoah in the Marais district in Paris , for example about the archive created and hidden in the Warsaw ghetto by Emmanuel Ringelblum and others .
Works and controversies
In his work, Bensoussan describes, among other things, the extermination of the Jews in World War II not as an anomaly in European history, but as a consequence of a logical development.
In 2002, Bensoussan published a book under the pseudonym Emmanuel Brenner entitled Les territoires perdus de la République: antisémitisme, racisme et sexisme en milieu scolaire . This book publishes statements by teachers and school principals that show anti-Semitic, racist and sexist attitudes on the part of students, especially among Muslim immigrant children.
Bensoussan rejects teaching about the Shoah in French elementary school classes because the children at this age are not mature enough to be confronted with the subject.
