Georges Franju (born April 12, 1912 in Fougères , Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne, † November 5, 1987 in Paris ) was a French film director .

In 1935 Franju founded the Cinémathèque française together with Henri Langlois in Paris . He first gained fame as a director of short films such as Métro (1934) and Le sang des bêtes (1949), a documentary about the Paris slaughterhouses. Other themes his films picked up were the Paris War Museum and Notre Dame Cathedral .

Franju's first feature film was La tête contre les murs (1958) based on a novel by Hervé Bazin . Later known works were Eyes Without a Face (1960), Thérèse Desqueyroux (1962), Judex (1963), Thomas l'imposteur (1964) and The Man Without a Face (1974). Under the title L'homme sans visage , Franju brought his feature film The Man Without a Face , which, like Judex, is based on the silent film series by Louis Feuillade , also in France in an extended form as an eight-part television series.
