occupation

The feature film Judex by Georges Franju , which premiered on December 4, 1963, is based on the twelve-part silent film series Judex by Louis Feuillade .

action

Franju's remake closely follows the plot of Feuillade's silent film series Judex until the kidnapping and kidnapping of Jaqueline Favraux in the old mill , the ramifications of which have, however, been greatly cut back, but repeatedly changes individual details (the ball on the occasion of the daughter's engagement becomes a masked ball, the also celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Favreaux bank; the banker collapses at midnight without drinking from the champagne glass handed by Judex, etc.).

background

As a co-founder of the Cinémathèque française , which had started collecting Feuillades films in 1936, Franju was familiar with the series; the script for his film, which is both a remake and an homage, he created on the basis of the 1917 template together with the Feuillade- Experts Jacques Champreux (also actor, author, director and Feuillades grandson) and Francis Lacassin (author of the authoritative monograph).

One of the best-known and most impressive elements of the 1963 film adaptation is an appearance by the avenger Judex (played by the American magician Channing Pollock ) in a bird costume at a masked ball, the disguise visibly inspired by the collages by Max Ernst.

Georges Franju on Judex : "Le film, qui est esthétique, décoratif, non réaliste et sentimental, est une sorte de féerie mélodramatique. S'il émeut c'est parce qu'il charme."

criticism

“Director Franju is particularly fascinated by the naive, darkly romantic poetry of these“ mysteries ”; his version is a loving homage and a funny parody at the same time. "

“Adaptation of a naive sequel story about the noble“ Defender of the Righteous ”, filmed in 1915 by the Frenchman Louis Feuillade. Franju used the same stylistic devices as Feuillade out of conviction and at the same time bowed from his teacher out of gratitude. Less valuable as a reflection of the zeitgeist of the time than as a formal experiment. For film art lovers. "
