Georges Képénékian (born August 9, 1949 in Lyon ) is a French doctor and politician ( Parti socialiste , LREM ). From July 2017 to November 2018 he was Mayor of Lyon.

Képénékian is of Armenian origin - Lyon is one of the centers of the Armenian diaspora in France . He is committed to the recognition of the Armenian genocide . Before entering politics, he worked as a urological surgeon at the Saint-Joseph Saint-Luc Hospital .

From 2008 he was one of the associates ( adjoint au maire ) of the longtime mayor of Lyon, Gérard Collomb ; since 2014 first associate ( premier adjoint au maire ). After Collomb, a confidante of the newly elected President Emmanuel Macron , was appointed Interior Minister in the Philippe cabinet , Képénékian was elected as his successor on July 17, 2017. After Collomb's resignation as Minister of the Interior in October 2018, Képénékian resigned his office and left his place for Collomb. Since then he has been first alderman again.
