Georges de La Tour (* 1593 in Vic-sur-Seille , Lorraine ; † thirtieth January 1652 in Lunéville ) was a Lorraine painter of the Baroque , which in the literature French is attributed Baroque painters.

Life

La Tour was the son of a master baker, the second of seven children. Nothing is known about his youth and apprenticeship; it is not known how he came to painting. In 1618 he married Diane Le Nerf, the daughter of a treasurer of the Duke of Lorraine.

In a document from 1639 he is the official painter of Louis XIII. ("Peintre ordinaire du Roy") mentioned. As early as 1644 he was referred to as "peintre fameux". His artistic motifs were both sacred and profane: his night pieces are kept dark throughout and only illuminated by candles. Because of his preference for high-contrast light-dark painting, he is one of the group of " Caravaggists ". He gained particular fame through the scenes from the picaresque life , daily plays that contain rip-offs , such as cheating with cards (see The cardsharp with the ace of diamonds ) and fraudulent fortune telling (see The fortune teller ). There is only one document about the painter: in 1646, citizens of the town of Lunéville complained to the Duke about La Tour because he “made himself hateful among the people because of the large number of dogs he kept as if he were the master of the place "And" who drives the rabbits into the grain, spoils and tramples it ". He was reported several times for brawls. One of his sons was raised to the nobility in 1670. It is unclear why he did not use his influence to set a memory for his father. There is no picture of the painter, he may have portrayed himself in the figure of the cardsharp in the painting The Cardsharp with the Ace of Diamonds.

Since the 1920s, La Tour's works have again received increased attention.

Trivia

  • For the design of the set of his horror film Nosferatu - Phantom of the Night from 1979, director Werner Herzog studied the paintings of the painter Georges de la Tour in order to gain inspiration for the staging of dark rooms that are only dimly lit by burning candles.
