Georgi Markow ( Bulgarian Георги Марков ; born March 12, 1978 in Gorno Vershilo ) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter and world record holder in snatching with 165.0 kg in the class up to 69 kg.

Athletic career

Markow, the 2000 Olympic champion in the class up to 69 kg, was convicted of doping for the first time at the 2003 World Cup in Vancouver when he and two of his teammates, Galabin Bojewski and Zlatan Vanev, had given the same urine sample. He was then given an 18-month ban from competition.

In the run-up to the 2008 Olympic Games , Markov tested positive again with ten other Bulgarian lifters and the athlete, who started in the German Bundesliga, among others, was given a lifelong ban as a repeat offender.
