Georgi Wassilew Metschkonev (also spelled Georgi Vasilev Mechkonev , Bulgarian Георги Василев Мечконев ; born April 20, 1858 in Pirot , Ottoman Empire (now in Serbia ); †  October 10, 1930 in Svishtov , Bulgaria ) was a Bulgarian freedom fighter and officer.

Life

Georgi Metschkonew was born in 1858 in the city ​​of Pirot, which belonged to Serbia after the Berlin Congress (1878). A Bulgarian minority still lives in the Pirot region and in south-east Serbia in general . In 1875 Metschkonew was one of the founders of the Pirot Revolutionary Committee of the Internal Revolutionary Organization (IRO) , alongside Todor Kableschkow . The goal of the IRO was a large-scale uprising that should lead to the liberation of the Bulgarians living under Ottoman rule. After the failure of the April uprising , Mechkonev fled to the Principality of Romania , where a large Bulgarian community in exile lived.

In the Russo-Turkish War from 1877 to 1878, fought as a volunteer in the Bulgarian Volunteer Corps of the Russian Army and took part in the Battle of the Shipka Pass . For his bravery he was made a non-commissioned officer.

After the liberation of Bulgaria , Mechkonev served in the newly formed Bulgarian army and after the establishment of the military academy in the Bulgarian capital Sofia he was part of the first class. He finished the academy in 1879 with the rank of sub-lieutenant and on July 9, 1881 was made lieutenant . From 1883 Metschkonew studied at the St. Petersburg Military Law Academy .

During the Serbian-Bulgarian War (1885) Metschkonew was a captain in the general staff of the Bulgarian army. He fought in the Battle of Slivnitsa and as part of the reconnaissance troop when the Bulgarian forces advanced on his hometown of Pirot (→ Battle of Pirot ). His experiences as a freedom fighter from the region played a significant role. After the war Metschkonew commanded from 1888 to 1891 the 5th Infantry Battalion in Russian and from 1891 to 1895 the 11th Infantry Battalion in Sliven , when he was appointed chief of staff of the 6th Infantry Division. On July 3, 1899, he ended his military career and went into the reserve.

Georgi Metschkonew died on October 10, 1930 in the Danube city of Swishtov .
