Georgi Petrovich Chistyakov

Georgi Petrovich Tschistjakow ( Russian Георгий Петрович Чистяков ; born August 4, 1953 in Moscow ; † June 22, 2007 in Moscow) was a Russian Orthodox priest, theologian, historian and classical philologist.

biography

Georgi was born to Pyotr Georgievich Tschistjakow († 1987) and Olga Nikolaewna († January 25, 2008). His father was a math teacher at the military academy for engineers of the air force “Prof. NJ Zhukovsky ” , his mother lecturer at the Faculty of Biology at Lomonosov University .

From 1970 to 1975 he studied at the historical faculty of Moscow's Lomonosov University. In 1983 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on Pausanias with the title Труды Павсания как исторический источник (The works of Pausanias as a historical source). From 1975 to 1993 he taught Latin and Ancient Greek at the Moscow State Linguistic University , as well as giving introductions to Romance studies and Romance languages. From 1985 to 1999 he held lectures on biblical, theological and church history topics at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology , and from 1983 to 1999 he held the chair for the history of culture . From 1991 to 2002 he also worked at the State University for Human Sciences . Outside Russia, Chistyakov held courses in Italy, France, Italy, and the United States. From 2000 he headed the Religious Literature Department of the All-Russian State Library of Foreign Literature.

In 1992 Tschistjakow was ordained a deacon, the ordination followed in 1993. From the ordination he performed his service in the church of Saints Cosmas and Damian in the center of Moscow. From 1994 he was also head of a church in a children's hospital. After suffering from cancer, Tschistjakow died at the age of 54.

Chistjakov worked as a pastor in the children's hospital, to which children and parents from all over Russia came. In addition, many sermons and addresses by the priest were recorded and some of them were broadcast on the radio.

Tschistjakow translated ancient Greek, Latin and Italian writers into Russian, such as Plutarch , Titus Livius or Niccolò Machiavelli , and he also wrote over 200 mostly scientific essays and some books - these mainly on religious topics.
