Georgina basin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Georgina Basin (English: Georgina Basin ) is an approx. 330,000 km² large sedimentary basin of the Australian craton (mainland core) in central and northern Australia. Most of the basin is in the Northern Territory , the smaller in Queensland . It is named after the Georgina River , a watercourse that flows through a section of this basin.

In the sedimentary basin there are approx. 4 km thick marine and non-marine deposits that formed from the Neoproterozoic to the late Paleozoic 850 to 330 million years ago. With the other nearby sedimentary basins, the Amadeus Basin and Officer Basin , which were formed at the same time, it is believed to have been part of the Centralian Superbasin in Australia that was fragmented by various series of tectonic activities.

The sedimentary basin partially overlies the Aileron Province , Tennant Region , the Murphy Inlier , McArthur Basin and South Nicholson Basin , the Lawn Hill Platform , Kalkarindji Province and the Carpentaria Basin .

The phosphate deposit, which also includes the Wonarah deposit, is of economic importance . in the south there are lead and zinc deposits and there are likely to be oil deposits in the sedimentary basin. Geological surveys for metals, diamonds , magnesium , petroleum and petroleum are currently being undertaken.
