In the sedimentary basin there are about 6 km thick rock layers, which were formed from the Mesoproterozoic 1480 to 1580 million years ago. The sedimentary rocks in the basin are sandstone , mudstone , slate and conglomerate . The sedimentary basin is partially superimposed on the Georgina basin .

Iron deposits are known in the South Nicholson Basin. However, since the area has not been explored, large deposits of metal, uranium , diamond , iron and petroleum (including oil shale ) are suspected.
