Carpentaria basin

The Carpentaria Basin (Engl. Carpentaria Basin ) is a large sedimentary basins in the north of Australia . Most of this basin is in the northeastern Northern Territory and extends below the Gulf of Carpentaria .

The rock layers, up to 5 km thick , were formed from the Jurassic to the Cretaceous between 205 and 65 million years ago. The basin contains sand , limestone and clay stones as well as large manganese deposits on Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria and bauxite deposits on the Gove Peninsula in Arnhem Land . Oil deposits are suspected off the coast.
