Koundouriotis came from an Arvanite family on the island of Hydra . He was the brother of the independence fighter Lazaros Koundouriotis . His grandson Pavlos Koundouriotis was an admiral and president of the Hellenic Republic .

Political career

Struggle for independence

After the struggle for independence began in 1821 , he and his family supported these efforts with generous donations and ships. During this time he was often at odds with other sea captains. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Revolution. From December 31, 1823 to April 26, 1826 he was President of the Executive and thus de facto Prime Minister during the Siege of Messolongi .

Promotion to Prime Minister

After independence he was a member of the cabinet of the first governor Ioannis Kapodistrias . After the assassination of Kapodistrias, he was elected President of the Senate. From April 22 to August 18, 1832 he was also President of the Government Commission.

Unlike most of the Hydra politicians, Koundouriotis did not join the English Party (Αγγλικό Κóμμα) but the French Party (Γαλλικό Κόμμα) because of his aversion to the Russian Party (Ρωσικό Κóμμα).

With date of March 1st, July / March 13,  1836 greg. King Ludwig I of Bavaria awarded him the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown .

From March 19 to October 17, 1848 he was Prime Minister for a short time.

His property on Hydra was bought by the Ministry of Culture in 1991 and converted into a museum, which shows, among other things, an exhibition on the recent history of Hydra.
