Georgios Mavros

Georgios Mavros ( Greek Γεώργιος Μαύρος , born March 15, 1909 in Kastelorizo ; † May 6, 1995 in Athens ) was a Greek lawyer and politician .

Life and politics

Georgios Mavros studied law in Athens and Berlin . He received his doctorate in Athens and became a lawyer in 1932. From 1937 he was also assistant professor of international law at the University of Athens.

His political career began after the Second World War . In 1945 he became State Secretary to Prime Minister Themistoklis Sofoulis , in 1946 he became Minister of Justice, temporarily also acting Minister for Education and Religious Affairs. In the same year he was elected to parliament for the Liberal Party . In various cabinets he was Minister of Economic Affairs (1949–1950), under Alexandros Diomidis, and Executive Coordination and Justice Minister under Sophoklis Venizelos , Minister of Finance (1951), and Minister of Defense (1952) under Nikolaos Plastiras . As a close colleague of Georgios Papandreou , he took over responsibility for economic and financial policy in his government as Coordination Minister 1963/1964. From 1949 to 1952 Mavros represented Greece as a member of the Board of Governors of the World Bank in Washington and from 1964 to 1966 he was Governor of the Greek National Bank .

After the Colonel coup in April 1967, Mavros was placed under house arrest from April to October 1968. As the political heir of Georgios Papandreou, who died in 1968, he was one of the main opponents of military rule.

After the Turkish invasion of Cyprus led to the collapse of the military junta, Mavros became foreign minister and deputy prime minister in the government of national unity under Konstantinos Karamanlis in July 1974 . In this role he negotiated the political status of Cyprus with his Turkish counterpart in Geneva . The negotiations failed in August 1974.

Mavros led the Center Union Enosis Kendrou under the name Center Union / New Forces in the first elections after the military rule on November 17, 1974. In addition to the dominant political personality of Konstantinos Karamanlis ( Nea Dimokratia ) and the increasingly center-left charismatic Andreas Papandreou's personality, however, failed to achieve success. In the parliamentary elections in 1974 his party won 20.42% in the elections in 1977 , it achieved under the name Union of the Democratic Center (EDIK) still 11.95%. Eventually Mavros joined Andreas Papandreou's PASOK party and was elected to parliament for PASOK in 1981. In 1984 he was elected to the European Parliament - also for PASOK - to which he was a member until 1989.

Mavros was an excellent expert on international law of the sea .
