The Georgian National Manuscript Center ( Georgian ხელნაწერთა ეროვნული ცენტრი , Chelnazerta Erownuli Zentri , scientific transliteration: Xelnacert'a Evronuli C'entri ) is a research center and archive based in Tbilisi . The focus is on Georgian and foreign-language manuscripts , old books, historical documents and legacies of famous Georgians.

history

The center was founded on June 30, 1958 on the basis of the holdings of the Manuscript Department of the Georgian State Museum, initially as the Manuscript Institute of the Georgian Academy of Sciences . The founder and first director of the institute at that time was Ilia Abuladze . In 1962 the institute was renamed the Korneli Kekelidze Institute for Manuscripts , in 2006 it was spun off from the Science Academy and declared a public law institution. On May 23, 2007 the name was changed again, now to the National Manuscript Center . The current director is the historian Buba Kudawa . The center is supported by a scientific advisory board, currently chaired by the historian Schalwa Gloweli.

The collection of the National Center for Manuscripts includes codices , handwritten books, historical documents, personal archival materials, early prints , rare publications and bequests.

The center carries out various projects in scientific research on manuscripts, restores old manuscripts and organizes exhibitions on Georgian and foreign-language manuscripts. The valuable material stored in the center is described, systematized, studied, published, for which databases should also serve.

The center also has a rich scientific library .

Some rooms are set up as memorial rooms for personalities such as Korneli Kekelidze , one of the first explorers of Georgian manuscripts, Iwane Javachishvili , the founder Ilia Abuladze, Nikolos Berdsenishvili , Elene Metreveli and Shalva Amiranashvili .
