Georgskirche Rotfelden

The Georgskirche in the main street in Rotfelden is a late Gothic hall church from the 17th century. The parish of Rotfelden assigned to it has been part of the Evangelical General Church Community of Wart-Rotfelden since 2015, which was converted into the Evangelical Verbundkirche community of Wart-Rotfelden-Ebershardt-Wenden in 2019 and belongs to the Calw-Nagold church district of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg .

history

The Georgskirche was built during the Thirty Years' War in 1626 by the builder Friedrich Vischlin from the Duke of Württemberg according to the Querkirchen concept with the chairs facing the pulpit on the north wall. The church tower, a side tower of the choir, stands on the remains of a previous building, which is not exactly dated (11th to 15th centuries), but perhaps belonged to a pilgrimage church . A “Jörgenkirche” in Rotfelden was mentioned early on. In 1543, Duke Ulrich from Württemberg bought the Rotfeld church. In 1559 a conflagration raged in the village, to which the predecessor building of the Georgskirche may also have fallen victim.

Above the south portal there is a memorial stone made of yellow sandstone with the following inscription:

In 1635, just a few years after the St. George's Church was built, almost half of the town's population fell victim to the plague . The pastor Johannes Zeller was among the dead. For years thereafter, Rotfelden no longer had its own pastor.

The interior of the church around 1910

In 1887 the church was renovated due to moisture damage. Wall paintings from the time the church was built were discovered, but they were whitewashed. In the course of this renovation, the church received new tracery windows , a new pulpit was installed and, as the pastor put it, the large image of Christ was transformed from a caricature into a poignant, evangelical simplicity. This is likely to be the baroque crucifx that hung next to the pulpit on the north wall and has graced the altar in the choir since the 1970s. A small altar crucifix made by the carver Hellstern from Altheim bei Horb in 1887 is not on display today. During the renovation in 1887, Eduard Paulus examined the traces of the previous building. The services were held outdoors or in the school house during this time and the church was consecrated again on December 18, 1887.

The pulpit from 1887 still exists, but is no longer built into the Georgskirche. The interior of the church was modernized in the 1970s. In this context, the eastern (middle) choir window was provided with an artistic glass design. The church offers 330 seats.

Peal

The Marienglocke with a diameter of about one meter dates from 1494. The clockwork was made by Perrot in Calw . During the First World War , all bells except the Marienglocke were melted down.
