Gephyrochromis ( gr ... "Gephyra" = bridge + "chromis" = old Bez for tilapia ( Syn .: Christyella Trewavas, 1935 )) is a cichlid - genus , which is endemic in the East African Lake Malawi occurs.

features

Gephyrochromis species are about 12 to 13 cm long and have the typical shape of a Mbuna , with an elongated, laterally slightly flattened body. Males are colored blue and yellow, females silvery gray to brownish. The special teeth, which are very close together, long-handled, conical and thin teeth are characteristic of the genus. The teeth are the same length in both jaws, but point inward in the upper jaw and outward in the lower jaw.

Way of life

Gephyrochromis species live in the transition zone between the rocky coast and the sandy coast and feed on small invertebrates. Like almost all cichlids in Lake Malawi, they are mouthbrooders .
