Gerald Gabrielse

Gerald Gabrielse (* 1951 ) is an American experimental physicist.

Gabrielse studied at Calvin College in Grand Rapids (Michigan) (Bachelor in 1973) and at the University of Chicago , where he received his master’s degree in 1975 and his doctorate in 1980. From 1982 he was assistant professor at the University of Washington and from 1987 professor at Harvard University . Since 2003 he has been the George Vasmer Leverett Professor of Physics there. From 2000 to 2003 he was chairman of the physics faculty at Harvard.

Gabrielse achieved various essential improvements in the measurement of fundamental physical quantities.

He headed the TRAP collaboration, which succeeded in building ion traps for antiprotons at temperatures of 4 K that had not yet been reached . The aim is to investigate anti-hydrogen with laser spectroscopy (for example in the ATRAP collaboration at CERN led by Gabrielse ) and the method provided the best test of CPT invariance to date (comparison of the mass-to-charge ratio of proton and antiproton with an accuracy of 9 10 −11 ).

With a one- electron quantum cyclotron, Gabrielse and co-workers were able to improve the measurement of the magnetic moment of the electron by a factor of 15 to the record that had existed for 20 years. The method also provided a 20-fold improvement over other methods of measuring the fine structure constant .

In 2002 he received the Davisson-Germer Prize and in 2011 the Julius Edgar Lilienfeld Prize . In 2007 he became a member of the National Academy of Sciences and in 2019 of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2005 he received the Humboldt Research Award and in 2008 the Italian Tommassoni and Chisesi Prize. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society .

He also teaches in schools and received a Harvard award for his teaching (Levenson Teaching Award) for undergraduate students.
