Gerald Hartung

Gerald Hartung (born January 2, 1963 in Osnabrück ) is a German philosopher .

Life

Gerald Hartung studied philosophy, religious studies and literature at the Free University of Berlin . After graduating with an M.A. in Philosophy (1989) he was a research assistant at the Institute for Philosophy at the Free University of Berlin (1992–1997) and at the Institute for Cultural Studies at the University of Leipzig (1998–2003). Following his doctorate in Berlin (1994) and his habilitation in Leipzig (2002), he was a fellow at the Research Institute for Philosophy Hanover (2003/2004), guest lecturer at the Humboldt University of Berlin (2004/2005), guest professor at the Max Weber-Kolleg at the University of Erfurt (2006/2007) and head of the theology and science department at the research facility of the Evangelical Study Community in Heidelberg (2007–2010).

Since 2010 he has been professor of philosophy at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal with a focus on cultural philosophy and aesthetics .

Scientific work

Research areas are philosophical anthropology, cultural philosophy and the theory of the history of philosophy as well as the history of philosophy and science of the 19th and 20th centuries. Since 2012 he has been the editor in charge of the outline of the history of philosophy, Die deutschsprachige Philosophie (Schwabe Verlag) in three volumes. He is also editor of the New Studies in the History and Historiography of Philosophy book series (De Gruyter Verlag) and - together with Matthias Herrgen - of the yearbook Interdisciplinary Anthropology and the book series of the same name (Springer VS). Gerald Hartung has been the spokesman for the Working Group on Philosophical Editions in the German Society for Philosophy since 2016, since 2018 President of the Scientific Board of Trustees for the Outline of Philosophy History at the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences (SAGW) and also (together with Laurent Cesalli, Geneva) General editor of the Outline of the History of Philosophy (Schwabe Verlag, Basel).
