Geraldine Fitzpatrick

Geraldine Fitzpatrick (* 1958 in Brisbane ) is an Australian computer scientist and professor at the Vienna University of Technology .

Life

Geraldine Fitzpatrick began training as a nurse in 1976 and completed it in 1979. She then aspired to study as a midwife under the direction of Professor Jenny Gamble, which she finished with receiving her diploma in 1983. She began her computer science studies in 1989 at the University of Queensland , where she completed her Bachelor of Information Technology with distinction in 1992, for which she received the University Medal for Academic Excellence . She then studied as part of a PhD program at the same university in 1993 and received her doctorate in 1998 with the work The Locales Framework: Understanding and Designing for Cooperative Work , for which she received the Dean's Prize for excellence . In 1998 she was a project manager and later a senior researcher at the Distributed Systems Technology Center in Brisbane. Between 2001 and 2003 she worked as a senior manager at Sapient , where she coordinated various research groups in an advisory and executive role. In June 2003 she accepted a position as senior scientist in a research group at the University of Sussex, England . Since 2009 she has been professor and head of the Human Computer Interaction Group research group at the Vienna University of Technology, while between 2011 and 2017 she was head of the former Institute for Design and Impact Research. In the course of her career, she has already supervised 10 PhD students through to their graduation and accepted more than 100 master and bachelor theses. Furthermore, Fitzpatrick was honored as an ACM Distinguished Scientist in 2016 and is an ACM Distinguished Speaker . She runs and moderates the Changing Academic Life podcast . She has been a certified coach since 2008 and completed a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology at the University of East London in 2018 . She leads workshops, training courses and coaching for academic executives, young researchers and doctoral students.
