Geraldine Hughes (* 1970 in West Belfast ) is a Northern Irish actress . Hughes has appeared in films such as Duplex , Rocky Balboa and Gran Torino . She also played the role of Mary Todd Lincoln in Killing Lincoln .

Life

Hughes was born in 1970 at Divis Flats in Belfast, Northern Ireland, into a Catholic household during the Northern Ireland conflict. Because she grew up during the Northern Ireland conflict, Hughes lived in a war zone as a child. She attended her school's drama club. As a child, Hughes never spoke of the horrors she'd witnessed in Belfast. Hughes left Belfast at the age of 18. She lived in Los Angeles for 16 years and then moved to New York City .

After being selected for her role in Children of the Crossfire (1984) at the age of 14, Hughes spent her first summer in the United States. She had no acting experience outside of her school's drama club when she accepted her role as Mary in the film.

In Belfast, Hughes attended St. Louis Louise Comprehensive School in the 1980s. She later attended the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) - with a private grant from those who worked with her on the film Children of the Crossfire . While these people were paying her tuition, she was paying her own living expenses. Hughes graduated with a BA from the School of Theater, Film and TV. In 2009, Queens University in Belfast awarded Hughes an honorary doctorate for services to the arts.

After a theatrical performance, Hughes was contacted by a casting director and asked to audition for her best-known role as Marie in Rocky Balboa (2006). Hughes was and is active in the performing arts. More recently, she has played a solo piece she wrote called the Belfast Blues . This is a play in which she describes and processes her experiences from her life in Belfast. The performances of this play are “dedicated to all children who live in conflict areas”.
