Athletic career

Gerd Bekendorf played his first two games in the second-rate GDR league at the age of 19, when he was used as a left runner in the last two league games of the 1965/66 season at Einheit Greifswald . At the end of this season, the BSG unit had to relegate to the district league and only returned to the GDR league in 1968 as district champion with Bekendorf. From the 1968/69 season onwards, the Greifswalders started under the new name BSG Kernkraftwerk Nord. Both in this season and in 1969/70 Bekendorf completed all 30 league games, where he was used in all parts of the team, but most recently mainly in defense. In 1970/71 he had to take a long break, so that he could only be called up 17 times in the 26 league games played. However, he scored his first GDR league goal. In the first half of the season Bekendorf was used in seven point games, after which he had to do a year of military service in the National People's Army from November 1971 . After his release, he returned to BSG KKW Nord and was used in six league games in the second half of the 1972/73 season. In the next three seasons Bekendorf was able to establish himself as a regular player, of the 66 league games he was able to continue to play 61 games as a defender. As such, he played for the nuclear power plant until 1979, but now had longer breaks in each season. In his last season as a football player, he also took over the training of the team and only offered himself in eight league games. Then he had completed 136 GDR league games and scored three goals. Bekendorf also trained the BSG KKW in 1980/81, but could not save them from relegation. He was replaced by his former teammate Bernd Blühdorn before the end of the season.
