Gottfried R. Cervenka (born August 29, 1947 in Vienna ; † December 15, 2015 in Mödling ) was an Austrian radio presenter.

Life

His interest in music was already aroused in the Bundesrealgymnasium Vereinsgasse in the 2nd district of Vienna , as the then music professor Hanns Zimmerl was able to inspire the students to his subject with his special enthusiasm and his passionate love for this genre. He even managed to bring famous singers like Max Lorenz to school.

For more than 30 years Gottfried Cervenka regularly arranged opera broadcasts for Austrian radio on Ö1 , especially the opera concert every Tuesday afternoon, which focused on historical recordings. When designing the programs, he was able to fall back on his own music collection of around 40,000 records. With his broadcasts he also succeeded in arousing interest in artists such as Gert Lutze, largely unknown in Austria. His last broadcast was dedicated to Hugh Beresford for his 90th birthday.

He also moderated operetta programs and opera broadcasts, especially from the Metropolitan Opera in New York .

In June 2008 he was awarded the professional title of " Professor " by the Federal Minister for Education, Art and Culture for his achievements in the music genre .

For more than 25 years he also ran the “Da Caruso” shop in Vienna's Operngasse, which was known worldwide as a specialist shop for classical music.

Gottfried Cervenka was married and had a son, whom he named after the heroic tenor Lauritz Melchior .
