The Bundesrealgymnasium Vereinsgasse , also known as BRG 2, is a Realgymnasium in the 2nd district of Vienna , Leopoldstadt . The long-term lower secondary school was founded in 1855 as one of the oldest secondary schools in Vienna. The new building completed in 1876 at its final location at Vereinsgasse 21–23 was considered to be the “most modern secondary school building in Vienna” at the time.

history

From the opening to the beginning of the First World War

At first only boys were accepted. The school opened on December 3, 1855 as a complete kk Unterrealschule zu St. Johann in the Wienzeile in the existing elementary school building in Weintraubengasse (today at No. 13), initially with two classes, which were opened in the following school year 3rd grade have been completed. From 1872 onwards the development of the upper secondary school took place.

Since many students had to be turned away due to the acute shortage of space, it was decided in 1872 to purchase a piece of land at Volkertmarkt. The construction started in 1872 was completed in 1876 and at that time was considered the most modern secondary school building in Vienna. As such, it was presented at the Paris World's Fair in 1878 . Electric lights began to be introduced in 1892, in 1903 the four-hour morning lessons with afternoon lessons were changed to five hours in the morning, and in 1911 physical education was reorganized, which also resulted in the establishment of a school medical service from 1912.

From World War I to 1945

In 1914 soldiers were quartered in the schoolhouse while the lessons were being maintained, and from 1914–1918, lessons for Galician refugee children were also conducted in Polish. The parents' association was founded on May 11, 1919, and female pupils were accepted for the first time in the 1919/20 school year. In 1922/23 the curriculum of the "German Middle School" was introduced, and since autumn 1924 women were represented in the teaching staff. The mathematical and scientific upper level reform was introduced in autumn 1926. After the Vienna school reform of Otto Glöckel the eight-year secondary school could be introduced from the 1927th

On March 15, 1938, director Wilhelm Illing was suspended from duty because of his Jewish descent and 49 Jewish students were forcibly transferred to other schools (e.g. Margaret Weidenfeld ); since 1989 a memorial plaque in the entrance hall commemorates the displaced students. In the school year 1939/40 the school was continued as a "high school for boys, mathematical and scientific branch". In 1944 the school building was badly affected by bombing and further damaged by artillery fire in the Battle of Vienna in 1945.

Reconstruction and renovation (1945-2000)

After the Second World War, director Illing was able to return, the school location was retained. Emergency classes could be resumed as early as autumn 1945. In the years 1947 to 1967, a Realgymnasium, later called the Sigmund Freud Gymnasium , which was then known as RG 2 or BRG 2, had to be housed in the Realschule building.

In 1963 the Realschule was renamed Realgymnasium (according to the School Organization Act of 1963) and in the school year 1969/70 the branch of the old Realschule school form finally expired. After the Sigmund-Freud-Gymnasium moved out, the planning of the general renovation was worked on from 1967 to 1970. In the years 1971 to 1974 the courtyard wing with a second gymnasium and ballroom was realized. The rest of the house was modernized between 1975 and 1983. After the upper level reform in 1985, which also brought new curricula, IT rooms were created from 1982 to 2000, afternoon care was set up in autumn 1991 and a library in 1992.

From 2000

In the 2001/2002 school year, the school gradually switched to a five-day week and the subject of network technology was newly introduced. In the years 2004 to 2008, further interior renovations and the expansion of the fire protection facilities took place.

In June 2014 it was announced that the Realgymnasium would be accommodated in an alternative quarter in the school years 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 at 1. Schellinggasse 13. (Other higher schools in Vienna were also temporarily located here.) During this time, a large extension was to be built on a vacant piece of land behind the BRG Vereinsgasse and the historic building was to be modernized. From autumn 2016, the school entrance should be in the new building on Lessinggasse, which crosses Vereinsgasse at the grammar school.

However, the construction project was subject to delays and, as was most recently forecast, should be opened in 2020 as a school center or BRG Lessinggasse. The new main entrance to the school is supposed to be in Lessinggasse; the high school will then be merged with the previous upper level high school (BORG) Hegelgasse (1st district).

The district in which the school is located has been known as the Volkertviertel since around 2010 .
