Martina Schettina (born March 7, 1961 in Vienna ; birth name Martina Ingeborg Tucek ) is an Austrian visual artist . She works primarily in the field of conceptual art , especially at the interface between mathematics and visual arts.

Life

Martina Schettina was born in 1961 in Vienna- Währing as the daughter of a mathematician . She spent her childhood in Vienna- Leopoldstadt , where she first attended elementary school in Parzmanitengasse, then the Bundesrealgymnasium Vereinsgasse , where she graduated with distinction in 1979. From 1979 on she studied mathematics with Harald Rindler and physics with Roman Sexl at the University of Vienna , graduating in 1983, and was also self- taught in painting. In 1989 she moved to neighboring Lower Austria, where she set up an artist's studio in Langenzersdorf . She received her artistic education and training at the Geras Summer Academy in 1993 with Ulrich Gansert , in 1994 with Peter Sengl and in 1995 with Hubert Aratym . She also studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna . She later learned Chinese ink painting from Xiaolan Huangpu . Schettina taught mathematics and physics at the Albertus Magnus Gymnasium in Vienna from 1984 to 2007. In mid-2007 she retired from school.

Since 2008, pictures by Martina Schettina have appeared regularly as illustrations in the Gerti Senger column in the colorful supplement of the Kronen-Zeitung on Sunday and occasionally in the Kleine Zeitung .

From 2008 she turned increasingly to conceptual art. She processes mathematical theories in her pictures and accompanies them with explanatory texts. In addition, the book “Mathemagical Images - Images and Texts” was published in 2009 with a foreword by Konrad Paul Liessmann . Since then she has been working with Bazon Brock and taking part in action teachings , for example in 2010 at the German Historical Museum in Berlin. Since 2010 she has also been a consultant at the State University of Design in Karlsruhe as part of the “The professionalized citizen” course. Her oeuvre also includes performances on mathematical topics, which she illustrates with her own pictures.

Martina Schettina is married to the Austrian author Helmut A. Gansterer . She lives and works in Vienna and Langenzersdorf .

Martina Schettina is a full member of the professional association IG Bildende Kunst and the professional association of visual artists in Austria .

Exhibition activity

She has been exhibiting nationally and internationally since 1992. Her first solo exhibition abroad was in 1999 at the Mots & Tableaux gallery in Brussels. Since then, her works have been shown in numerous exhibitions in museums and galleries. The works were also represented at international art fairs, including Art Expo New York, CIGE Beijing and Art Shanghai. In 2010 she developed the concept for the first Austrian light art biennial together with Manfred Kielnhofer .

In her figurative work, the artist deals in a variety of ways with the position of women in society. The valid role models of men and women are questioned. Since her figures seem to be transparent, Schettina is often referred to as the painter with the glass handwriting. There are also references to Pop Art . Her picture “Orange Dress”, which depicts a self-confident, modern woman, adorned the poster for the exhibition “City. Country. Frau. ”In the Weinstadtmuseum Krems.

Since 2008, Schettina has mainly been working on mathematical topics, which she implements artistically in her pictures. In December 2009 the book "Mathemagische Bilder" was published with texts and pictures by the artist.

Collections

Pictures are in the collection of the Province of Lower Austria , the Weinstadtmuseum Krems, Fernwärme Wien , the HMZ Privatstiftung Helmut M. Zoidl in Spielfeld in Styria and the Helmut Klewan Collection in Munich and Vienna . Sculptures can be found in the Artpark Linz sculpture park and in the public space of Poysdorf . In 2011 the painting “Pro Maximis et Minimis” from the “ Leibnitz ” series was purchased by the culture department of Lower Austria for the collection of contemporary art. In 2013 the Sacred World Museum New Delhi acquired the artist's light sculpture "Tetrahedron Red". The image E = mc²- The World's Most Famous Equation was selected by curator Peter Noever for the Luciano Benetton collection as part of the "Vienna for art's sake" project.

Art in construction and special projects

For the social housing project intercultural living "com" in Vienna, Martina Schettina designed an intervention called "Speakers Corner" in 2013. In 2008 she was involved in the wall design for the Dianabad . In 2015 she was in charge of the artistic design of the Mindbreeze office in Linz. In 2016 she designed pictures for Alfred , the first rock opera to be written in Austria.
