"The Guardians of Time" by Linz artist Manfred Kielnhofer are at the forefront of a long-term development. The constant examination of spatial concepts, sculptures and installations as well as the preoccupation with mysticism and primeval religions led the artist to these his "guardians of time". In 2006 the first figure of this kind was created, reminding of a walking, withdrawn monk. Kielnhofer likes to post his figures in special locations, such as old monasteries, in front of castles, high-rise buildings or in abandoned salt mines. Kielnhofer's “Wächter” appear and disappear, we can never predict where they will appear next. This is how we should be reminded that we are never unobserved. Each of our actions is seen and evaluated by the guards. "

- Art criticism: Martina Gansterer

In 2009 Kielnhofer created a series of novel nude photographs. For this purpose, he made a special water basin in his photo studio, which enables him to photograph the models together with their reflections in the water. One photograph appeared on the front page of the New York print edition EYES IN and more photos were published in the Kronen Zeitung.

In 2010, together with Martina Schettina, he developed the concept for the first Austrian light art biennial . The Interlux Chair, Kielnhofer's contribution to the Light Art Biennale, has been included in the MAK 's design database .

2012 Creation of the first miniature watchdog. The mini guard, limited number, 54 × 36 × 34 cm made of plastic.

2013 The first life-size guardians of the time in bronze were cast in the art foundry Krismer.

2014 Three large-format guards made of polyester 220 × 220 × 220 cm were shown at the Festival of Lights on Potsdamer Platz in Berlin.

2015 First collaboration with the glass manufacturer Berengo in Murano.

2016 Five standing guardians in life-size were made from white Carrara marble.

2020 Three seated guards, each 220 cm high and painted in gold, were purchased by the city of Steyr and exhibited at the Steyr town square .

Reviews

Kielnhofer, who also describes himself as an “environmental activist” and a “guerrilla artist”, was noticed in the past for presenting his works of art, sometimes without permission, at environmental movements and exhibitions. In 2012 and 2017, Kielnhofer set up his Guardians at various Documenta locations in Kassel, some of them without permission, the exhibition organizers gave him the cold shoulder and had the statues removed several times.

The acquisition of three statues from the series "Guardians of Time" by the City Councilor for Culture of the City of Steyr in summer 2020 also caused a lot of criticism from the art scene. The statues ultimately led to the resignation of the city's cultural adviser and gallery owner Frieda Pohlhammer, who protested against the purchase of artistic "off the shelf" goods, as the statues are also offered in various online retailers. The shape of the statues reminds the artists of various pop culture representations and thus the artistic value is doubtful. The owner of the Porzellanmanufaktur Neuzeughammer Keramik, Mag. Beate Seckauer, is amazed at the opaque selection of the alleged art purchases and, as the chairman of the city's cultural advisory board of the city of Steyr, demands that her committee have a say in cultural matters in general and art in public space in particular.
