The Egon Schiele Art Centrum (ESAC) is a museum and gallery in Český Krumlov (Krumau) in the Czech Republic . The private non-profit organization deals with the Austrian painter Egon Schiele (1890–1918), with classical art of the 20th century as well as contemporary art .

History of buildings

The Egon Schiele Art Centrum is housed in the former city brewery, which was in operation from 1608 to 1949. Originally there were 4 town houses on the site of today's complex, which the city administration bought in stages. After the city had obtained the right to brew brewing in 1503 to cover the high city expenses , a house was purchased as a malt house in 1523 , which supplied the surrounding bourgeois microbreweries , which had already received the brewing license in 1347, with malt. In order to expand the malt business, the house on the left was bought in 1584 and the house on the right in 1606. After major renovation work by the local mason Hans Haas and the renowned Budweiser master builder Domenico Benedetto Cometta , the own brewery was started at the end of 1608 - i.e. before the stately Eggenberg brewery in the Latrán district . When the houses were numbered consecutively in 1882, the house on the far left was still considered independent and was therefore given the separate house number 70, while the municipal brewery bears the number 71.

The building has a uniform sgraffito facade, which has been changed several times over the years. While the brewery still had sgraffiti with dark, so-called diamond shadows around 1900 , today you can see a shadowless ashlar plaster .

Garden studio

In order to promote cultural exchange, part of the museum complex was expanded into scholarship studios by 2009, which international organizations can rent for ten years. They are or were financed, among others, by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the Austrian Ministry of Culture , the Regional Cultural Directorate of Upper Austria and the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art ( Moldova grant from 1998 to 2010). The scholarships are awarded by the institutions of the respective countries. Mainly scholars from Austria (since 1995), Germany (1997 to 2011), Hungary (1998 to 2014), Upper Austria (since 1999) and Taiwan (since 2004) regularly use or have used studios. After the renovation of Schiele's garden studio by the Českokrumlovský rozvojový fond (ČKRF), the living and studio rooms in the building rented by Art Centrum in Linecká 343 are also used to accommodate scholarship holders.
