Jan Vičar (composer)

Jan Vičar (born May 5, 1949 in Olomouc ) is a Czech composer, musicologist and teacher.

Vičar studied music education and composition in Olomouc, Brno and Prague. From 1989 to 1989 he was editor of the music journal Hudebni rozhledy . Between 1990 and 1998 and from 2000 to 2003 he headed the musicological institute at the Palacký University in Olomouc . As part of the Fulbright US Scholar Program , he gave at eight American universities from 1988-99, including St. Cloud State University , the University of Iowa , Florida State University , Wake Forest University , American University and the University of New Mexico , Lectures. He was a member of the steering committee for the research program on musical life in Europe between 1600 and 1900 of the European Science Foundation . In 2005 he taught composition and music theory as a visiting professor at Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama. Since 2006 he has been a member of the Birmingham Art Music Alliance .

Vičar has published five books: Accordion (1981), Václav Trojan (1989), Music Criticism and the Popularization of Music (1997), Musical Aesthetics (1998) and Imprints: Essays on Czech Music and Aesthetics (2005). His compositions appeared a. a. on the Vivat Universitas CDs ! , We Sing and Fortissimo .
