Helmut Gansterer (born July 20, 1946 in Neunkirchen ) is an Austrian journalist , editor and author .

Life

Helmut A. Gansterer grew up as the son of Alois and Maria Gansterer in Pottschach , Ternitz municipality . The A. is an abbreviation for Alois, in honor of his father.

Gansterer graduated from HTL Mödling in Mödling in the field of mechanical engineering, engine and motor vehicle construction. From 1965 to 1968 he studied economics at the University of World Trade in Vienna. There he was invited on the basis of a letter to the editor to write for the student newspaper Hermes, of which he became editor-in-chief a short time later (1966).

Before completing his studies, he joined the newly founded business magazine trend in 1970 . In 1971 he switched to the advertising industry and became a copywriter for the Ogilvy & Mather agency . At the same time he founded the business magazine Economy , which was sold to ORAC-Verlag in December 1973. After working as editor-in-chief for Economy for two years , he moved to trend in 1974 as deputy editor-in-chief . In 1976 he was promoted to editor-in-chief and a year later he was appointed editor. Gansterer was editor-in-chief and sole publisher of trend until 1997 . From 1997 to September 2008 he was editor together with Christian Rainer , since October 2008 he has been an author for trend . Until the end of 2012, Gansterer regularly wrote a column entitled “Good News” every two weeks for the magazine profil . The first column under this title was published on May 3, 1999.

Since 1973 Gansterer has also been writing texts for the car magazine autorevue . His first article appeared in issue 5/1973 (Mercedes 450 model presentation). He first used the pseudonym Phil Waldeck in the 5/1976 issue in a story about the Jaguar E convertible . Since 1986 he has been writing the monthly hiking letter . The first traveling letter (under Philipp Waldeck) appeared in the 5/1986 issue (from Rio de Janeiro).

From March 2011 to June 2014, Gansterer, also using the pseudonym Phil Waldeck, wrote the “Waldecks Wallfahrten” for the monthly magazine “ schau - inwien und um Wien ”, which was marketed until July 2012 under the name “inwien”. These stories were each illustrated with a photo by the photographer Helmut A. Gansterer. From 2016–2018 he regularly wrote stories for the motorcycle magazine under the title "Das Weird Leben" .

Industry colleagues gave Gansterer the nickname "Edelfeder".

Gansterer is the author and co-author of numerous books.

  • In 2014, Helmut A. Gansterer was chosen in a combined public and expert voting by Extradienst magazine in the category veteran of the year (behind Hugo Portisch ).
  • 2015 First place in the category "The legend writes" after an audience vote combined with an expert jury from the industry magazine Extradienst.

Working for the radio

Gansterer moderated Club 2 several times for ORF , hosted the program Extrazimmer , and as a guest in the “Pressestunde”, “Kreuz und Quer”, etc. He created the script for the documentary series “Die Erben”. From February 2013 to mid-2014, Gansterer had his own talk show on Schau TV with the title Gansterer zur Geisterstunde .

photography

As a journalist, Helmut Gansterer added photos to many of his reports in trend, the Autorevue or in various travel magazines. During his time as editor-in-chief, trend published numerous picture essays by the author. His first public photo exhibition took place under the title: “Light enough. Photographs of a Writer ” took place in St. Pölten in 2012 . As a photographer , he accompanied his monthly column "Waldecks Wallfahrten", which appeared under his pseudonym Phil Waldeck in the magazine "Schau - inwien und rundherum" from 2012 to 2014 in Bohmann Druck & Verlag .
