Rolling Stars and Planets are spherical art objects that have a uniform format and appearance, but have been painted differently or designed in the form of objects by around 25 artists. The outer “frame”, an invention by Ledersberger-Lehoczky, consists of ring-shaped aluminum strips with a diameter of around 100 cm. This frame forms an associative reference to the trajectories of celestial bodies . It also serves as protection, makes rolling easier and gives the individually designed objects a connecting element.

The inner parts with a diameter of around 75 cm were individually designed by the individual artists based on a wide variety of ideas from astronomy , astrology , mythology and legends .

development

In autumn 2008, organized Lederberger-Lehoczky and István Jankovics the Gothard Astrophysical Observatory of the Eotvos Lorand University in Szombathely a symposium . The subject was man in space . Sculptures by five sculptors were also shown at this event. As part of the “Planetra Science Congess” 2008 in Münster, Ledersberger-Lehoczky presented a project for the year of astronomy 2009, which should artistically interpret the topic of astronomy.

Günther Frank and Elisabeth Ledersberger-Lehoczky came up with the idea of a joint action with individually designed spherical pictures , the further development took place with the participation of the sculptor János Kalmár.

implementation

For the year of astronomy 2009, 25 artists, mostly from the circle of friends of the initiators, created spherical images and objects. The artists used different techniques such as painting or collage or even executed the interior of the sphere as an object. Some of the participating artists are members of the sculpture section of the professional association of Austrian visual artists, of which Ledersberger-Lehoczky is the director.

For each ball picture, the artist in question wrote a description describing the idea and the technique.

The first event took place on April 4, 2009 at the square in front of the Natural History Museum in Vienna. On this international day of astronomy, the first roll action was carried out as part of the “100 hours of astronomy”. The artists rolled the balls around the Maria Theresa statue.

In May 2009 the BiondekBühne theater and dance workshop in Baden near Vienna developed its own choreography on the subject of Rolling Stars and Planets with a 14-person dance performance group, the "Ladies-First-Ladies". This performance was performed as part of the roll campaigns in Baden and Linz.

At the opening event at Maria-Theresienplatz, the performance group SF - SlowForward presented their number "Breath of the Cosmos", which had been choreographed especially for the Rolling Stars and Plandets. This performance was repeated at the action day in Linz on September 3, 2009.

The year 2010 opened the Rolling Stars with a public roll action in front of the Künstlerhaus Graz .

description

“The“ sphere ”motif is a primordial symbol of movement; the constructivists have also taken up this motif and devised kinetic objects to thematize the interrelationship between movement and color. The artists involved in “Rolling Stars and Planets” also have to react to the spherical shape; this formal premise in combination with the topic of astronomy evokes fascinatingly divergent associations and transformations.
