Gerd Friedrich

Gerd Friedrich (born October 28, 1928 in Berlin ) is a German economist and former university professor in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The two-time national award winner of the GDR was for many years chairman of the "Scientific Council for Management Issues in the Economy" and was considered one of the leading GDR scientists in the field of economic management.

Life

Friedrich studied economics at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1947 to 1950 , earned his diploma and became a research assistant. In 1955 he received his doctorate with a thesis on "Cooperation between state- owned companies (VEB) in automobile and tractor construction in the GDR".

He then became a lecturer at the University of Economics "Bruno Leuschner" Berlin (HfÖ), where he qualified as a professor in 1961 with the text "On the work of the state management bodies of socialist industry with leading companies". At the HfÖ, he played a key role in setting up the industrial economics department.

In 1967 Friedrich switched to the "Institute for Socialist Economic Management at the Ministry of Light Industry" in Woltersdorf (near Berlin) as director . A year later he became deputy director of the " Central Institute for Socialist Economic Management at the Central Committee (ZK) of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) ". In the same year Friedrich became chairman of the scientific council for questions of the management in the economy and editor-in-chief of the professional journal economics . In 1975 Friedrich was appointed a corresponding member and in 1986 a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR .

Friedrich was one of the leading GDR scholars in the field of economic management and was involved in theoretical preparatory work and concrete economic policy measures as part of the economic reform of the 1960s . His main research topics were devoted to the problems of the nationalization of industrial production and its organization afterwards.
