Gerd Uhlig

Gerd Uhlig (born February 13, 1927 - † January 26, 2020 ) was a German police officer. He was lieutenant general and deputy to the chief of the German People's Police .

Life

After the Second World War , Uhlig joined the SED and became a member of the German People's Police (DVP) on January 1, 1947. He began his service with the security police and embarked on an officer career. From 1954 to 1959 he was deputy to the head of the district authority of the German People's Police (BDVP) Cottbus . From 1959 to 1967 he was the VP chief of the BDVP Dresden (successor to Heinrich Hertel ) and a member of the SED district leadership in Dresden. The chairman of the National Defense Council of the GDR , Walter Ulbricht , appointed him major-general and deputy to the head of the DVP on July 3, 1967. As such, he was responsible for the protection and criminal police and head of the central working group “Road Safety”.

As the head of the police force, Uhlig was held responsible for the breakdown at the Erfurt meeting of Willi Stoph and Willy Brandt in March 1970 on the station square in front of the conference hotel, and in November 1970 he was relieved of his position as deputy head of the DVP.

In January 1974 he was again deputy head of the DVP and was briefly head of political administration in the Ministry of the Interior of the GDR (MdI) as the successor to Ewald Eichhorn . He then continued to work as a general in the Ministry of the Interior, most recently as head of the minister's office. On June 27, 1988 he was promoted to lieutenant general by the chairman of the National Defense Council of the GDR, Erich Honecker .

Uhlig lived in Wildau and died on January 26, 2020 at the age of 92.
