Gereon Wolters (lawyer)

Gereon Wolters (born February 1, 1966 in Münster ) is a German lawyer , professor at the Ruhr University Bochum and deputy member of the constitutional court for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

Life

Wolters did his community service after graduating from high school and studied medicine for a semester. From the summer semester of 1988 he studied law at the Free University of Berlin , later at the University of Kiel , where he passed his first state examination in 1992. In 1994 he did his doctorate in Kiel with Eckhard Horn . In the same year he began his legal clerkship at the Schleswig-Holstein Higher Regional Court in Schleswig, which he completed in 1996 with the second state examination at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in Hamburg. In 2001 Wolters completed his habilitation at Horn in Kiel and received the venia legendi for the subjects of criminal law, sanction law and criminal procedure law.

In the summer semester of 2002, Wolters held a chair at the University of Augsburg , and in the following winter semester a chair at the University of Bochum . Since December 2005 Wolters has held the chair for criminal law and criminal procedural law, commercial criminal law and international criminal law at the University of Bochum. He turned down offers to the universities of Augsburg and Osnabrück . From 2007 to 2010 Wolters was also a judge in the second main office at the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court . From 2012 to 2014 he was also dean of the law faculty of the University of Bochum and from 2014 to 2017 chairman of the academic senate. Wolters has been a deputy member of the constitutional court for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia since 2018 .

Wolters is married and has four sons. In addition to the general and specific section of the Criminal Code, he teaches and researches primarily on the law of sanctions and commercial criminal law.

Wolters has been a member of the SPD since 1888 . For the 2017 federal election , he was nominated as a direct candidate in the Essen III constituency after Petra Hinz no longer ran due to the affair surrounding her fictional legal state examination . In the federal election on September 24, 2017, he achieved a result of 30.8% of the first votes and was thus defeated by his opponent Matthias Hauer from the CDU (37.1%).
