Gerfried Schellberger

Gerfried Schellberger (born March 1, 1918 in Arnau , now the Czech Republic , † June 22, 2008 in Öhningen ) was a German painter and author.

Schellberger grew up in Komotau in the Ore Mountains . He graduated with honors from the Goethe-Gymnasium in 1937, where his father Ludwig Christoph Schellberger was a professor. From 1938 he studied at the Charles University in Prague , but he had to break off his studies in 1939 after being drafted into the Wehrmacht . During the Second World War he fought on the Eastern and Western Fronts and was a French prisoner of war from 1945 to 1947 . In 1947 he completed his apprenticeship as a ceramist with Heinz Detlef Wüpper . In 1949 he finally moved to Nieder-Modau in southern Hesse to live with his fiancée Emmi Goldrun, a teacher .

In Nieder-Modau he completed his studies at the Pedagogical Institute in Darmstadt after a year and a half with the examination for teaching at elementary and secondary schools. In 1953 he married his fiancée and moved to Lake Constance with her in 1956 . In addition to teaching, he worked on his art. In 1978 his first major exhibitions at home and abroad took place. After retiring in 1981, he returned to working with clay and published several books, including those of his brother, who died in 1947.
