Gerhard Albersheim

Gerhard Albersheim (born November 17, 1902 in Cologne , † October 19, 1996 in Basel ) was an American musicologist and pianist of German origin.

life and work

Albersheim first studied piano, cello and music theory in Cologne. He then went on to study in Vienna. He completed these studies in 1930 with the Austrian state examination for music teachers with a major in piano. From 1926 to 1929 he also studied privately for three years with Heinrich Schenker in Vienna. While he was giving private lessons and working as a tutor, he received his doctorate in physics and musicology from the University of Vienna from 1933 to 1938. In 1939 he published his dissertation on a topic of acoustic psychology.

In 1939 Albersheim emigrated to Los Angeles and later took American citizenship. Since 1947 he taught in Los Angeles at the faculty of the Conservatory of Music and Arts . In 1956 he became Assistant Professor of Music at the State College of Applied Arts and Sciences . In the same year he was appointed Acting Professor of Music at the University of California in Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, Albersheim also worked as a pianist and song accompanist. He accompanied Elisabeth Schumann , Ezio Pinza and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in public concerts. He assisted Lotte Lehmann in her singing courses. In his publications, he mainly dealt with topics such as musical acoustics, the psychology of hearing and their relationship to musical aesthetics.

For his retirement from 1969 he settled in Basel.
