Gerhard Engelmann (born December 12, 1921 ) is a former German football player who was active from 1949 to 1955 for Unity / Progress Meerane in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

The sports community (SG) Einheit Meerane took part in both 1948 and 1949 as Saxony's runner-up in the soccer east zone championship and reached the semi-finals. Defender Gerhard Engelmann was one of the players involved. As the Saxon runner-up in 1949, Einheit Meerane had also qualified for the first season of the newly founded Eastern Zone League (later GDR Oberliga). In the Eastern Zone League, the Meeraner started as a company sports community (BSG) unit and again had Engelmann, now 27, in the squad. He played 23 of the 26 point games in 1949/50, but was mainly used in midfield. Player-coach planned for the 1950/51 seasonErich Lüdecke with Engelmann again as defender, but he was already out after the 2nd match day and was only used as a substitute goalkeeper in the penultimate game of the season 23 minutes. In the course of this season the Meeraner BSG was renamed BSG Progress. In the season 1951/52 Engelmann was fully operational again, played again in midfield and only missed one of the 36 league games. Since the BSG was determined at the end of the season as relegated from the league, Engelmann spent the season 1952/53 in the second-rate GDR league . There he played 23 of the 24 point games and made a significant contribution to the immediate return to the league. Progress Meerane was able to hold onto two seasons in the league. Of the 52 league games played in this period, Engelmann completed 46 matches, again as a defender. After the transition round, which was played in GDR football in autumn 1955 to change to the calendar year rhythm in which Engelmann was used in all 13 GDR league games, he played three more seasons in the GDR until 1958 League. He was used 74 times in a total of 78 league games. After the end of the 1958 season, Gerhard Engelmann ended his career in high-class football at the age of just under 37. There he had completed 107 games in the GDR league and 110 games in the GDR league. He did not score goals in these games. In addition, Engelmann has been in the selection of Saxony several times.
