Gerhard Günther (historian)

Gerhard Günther (born February 22, 1930 in Greiz ) is a German lawyer , archivist and historian .

Life

Günther comes from the Reussian Vogtland . After attending school, he studied law at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . 1956/57 he received his doctorate with the thesis The beginning of the reception of the medieval Roman civil law in Thuringia until the mid-14th century to Dr. jur. In 1959 he was appointed director of the Mühlhausen City Archives. He also studied at the Humboldt University of Berlin Archival Science and received his doctorate in 1973 at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig with the thesis studies the history of the Reformation and the Peasants' War to Dr. phil.

In issue 2/1990, Gerhard Günther, as director of the Mühlhausen city archive and head of the Mühlhausen district archive, addressed the scientific public with a critical comment on the archival system in the GDR.
