Gerhard Hirsch (Numismatist)

Gerhard Hirsch (born February 24, 1903 in Munich ; † July 9, 1982 ) was a German numismatist , coin dealer and auctioneer .

Life

Hirsch graduated from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich in 1922 and in the same year joined the Otto Helbing Descendants coin dealership , which had been run by his father Moritz Hirsch (d. 1914) and his uncle Heinrich Hirsch since 1910 ; he was co-owner since 1934. After the Jewish family had been banned from auctioning since 1935, Gerhard Hirsch went to Prague , where he continued to work as a coin dealer. The company in Munich was sold in 1939. Gerhard Hirsch was sent to the Theresienstadt and Auschwitz concentration camps . After the war, he returned to Munich, where he ran the Gerhard Hirsch Numismatiker and Gerhard Hirsch coin dealership from 1953 until his death . His company conducted a total of 134 auctions by 1982. Since his death, the company has been continued as Gerhard Hirsch's successor by his niece Francisca Bernheimer.
